Broadcasters Lend a Hand to Help Consumers with TV Rescan

Handy Videos Show How Easy a TV Rescan Can Be

Change isn’t always easy. Even when things change for the better, it can be a tough and potentially long road to get there. With more than 1,000 TV stations changing frequencies to make room for expanded wireless services, there are, quite literally, a lot of moving parts.

When a TV station changes frequencies, there is a lot of work happening behind the scenes that isn’t quick or easy. But fortunately for consumers who use an antenna to access free, over-the-air TV, the required TV rescan is a relatively simple process using the TV remote control.

It can take a station anywhere from 12 months to more than three years to complete the behind-the-scenes process involved in a frequency move. The National Association of Broadcasters helps its TV station members get the word out when a Rescan Day is approaching by sharing how to perform a TV rescan and what to do if the rescan isn’t successful the first time around.

Many stations have done a great job providing helpful videos to their antenna TV viewers, and here are just a few to help you better understand this required change. You can find out if and when your local stations will be transitioning by clicking here. Make sure to also sign up for text and email alerts to know when you have to rescan your TV.

WFTV in Orlando-Daytona Beach-Melbourne, Fla., posted this video that not only provides easy “how to rescan” information, but also a behind-the-scenes peek into what the station had to do to change frequencies. It took more than three years and included using a helicopter to replace an antenna on a 1,610-foot tower.

Also in Florida, the crew at WMOR-TV in Tampa-St. Petersburg has made sure their Operation Rescan campaign is front and center. Check out this video on their Facebook page.

In New Orleans, WWL-TV offers helpful visuals for their viewers in this video that shows just how easy a TV rescan can be.

Change is inevitable, especially when it comes to technology. Nobody can escape it and only when we embrace it can we make the best of it.

Thank you to all of our partners who are working tirelessly to ensure this process goes smoothly and that consumers are informed.
